I don’t like to make things easy on myself either. I forced myself to use Ubuntu (10.04).

I spent the last few nights not doing much in the way of learning ruby and rails. I was really focused on getting my Ubuntu 10.04 development environment up and running. i also took a detour to learn about GIT and github.

GIT and Gihub are not hard, but there is not that many resources that teach you what GIT is and how it work from the ground up. Most if the information out there just assume you know what it is and WHY you need to use it.

I did get rails and everything working from the Command line, but I also install Radrails and there was some glitches getting it to work. I got thru a few chapters of the book and have an outline of the DEMO shopping cart system working. Hopefully now I can pick up the pace and start working on my own ideas soon.

My opinion on the Mater is that Java is a very widely used language, but If you don’t know it by now, it may not be the best choice to go with. Many of the Jobs out there for Java programmers require you you to an expert with years of experience. I was thinking something some like ruby on rails, Iphone and Android (need Java anyway) development.

I didn’t have a chance to update my blog or really work on my existing projects. I have received a few requests for an affiliate template in Magneto, so guess I will finish that up, and get that out soon.

I have really been working my Video making while I was abroad. I didn’t get much of a chance to review the footage in country, but now that I am back I can see alot of my filming mistakes.

I did get in some poker games over there. it was nice to play some low stakes live. .40-.80 cents low.

one thing about the trip is that I have a list 1000 pages long of new things I want to do. New projects and such. So More coming soon.

This worked for me when I was getting Google base error: Expected response code 200, got 400.

Two are Traditional Shopping cart sites, but the my newest one had to be an affiliate style site.

What I mean by an affiliate site is that when you click on the buy it now button you are taken to a 3rd party website to complete the sale. Magento does not do this out of the box, it took a long sleepless night for me to figure out how to do this. Not too many people are willing to share how they did this either. I have to thank Platinumtackle.com for their help.

I will be releasing the template that I created to do this very soon. I need to test it some more and finish building my new site.

The one thing I seem to find it that alot of books focus on getting you to start writing code and alot of the code you just don’t understand fully (Well at least I didn’t). They really don’t explain what and how things are working. I started looking more at Java text books and that really spent too much time on theory and high level coding ideas. I watched some great Videos on line, but they started with test driven development, but I really needed the basics in simple to understand english.

What I needed is a ground up java class in a book. What I stumbled upon was Head First Java, 2nd Edition. After just a few days I am about half way thru this book. It is the first programming book that you can actually read. You don’t have to read it next to a computer.

The book teaches you the basics and the meaning behind them, it challenges you with different learning styles. The code that is in the book is easy to read and are fun relevant things you might want to try. No boring hello world, how about creating a battleship game? I will be working on Android code soon at this rate.

On my main machine, now running Windows 7 RC I installed the following:
Java JDK
The Eclipse IDE
The Android SDK
The Android plug-in for Eclipse.

I set up the Virtual device and got the hello World running on the Android emulator.

The Problem: Other than a few programming classes in college and some basic Html, php and MySql. I am a total newbie at programming complete applications.

The biggest key idea is that if you want to program in android you must learn Java first. ( If your an expert C developer, then you might be ok too).

My Plan:

    Learn the Eclipse IDE
    Learn Java
    Learn Android
    Write Android Apps
    Win ADC2

Simple enough, Lets get started.
